Modcell Prefabricated Straw Panels
Located in Bristol, UK, ModCell has designed a pre manufactured straw bale and hemp panel system. ModCell designs the panels, connects with a local farmer for material supplies and assembly facilities, and constructs the panels usually within 10 miles of the building site. This practice, which ModCell calls “flying factories” decreases the environmental impact due to shipping, ensures manufacture under controlled conditions, and allows much of the product value to assist the local economy.
The panels’ assembly includes PEFC or FSC certified timber as the structural frame, locally sourced straw bales or hempcrete as the infill or insulation, and lime render or plaster as the interior and exterior finish. In some cases, ModCell uses a timber cladding for the exterior finish.
Although the use of ModCell Panels is not feasible in the United States because of increased travel distances, a similar production process would be feasible especially in the northern plains where we have an abundant source of straw.

The first straw bale buildings were located in the Sand Hills of Nebraska in the 1800s. European settlers were given few alternatives for building as the northern plains offered minimal lumber, stone, or sod. So they used one of the oldest known methods of construction, stacking, in combination with a new material, straw. Many of these homes still exist and, if maintained, are still in excellent shape. The oldest known straw bale construction in the world, located in Alliance, Nebraska, turned 100 years old in 2003. Read More... |
